Leaf Thunderstorm
Artist Biography: Leaf Thunderstorm
I’m a self-taught artist and have spent most of my adult life working in remote areas as a biologist and Search and Rescue volunteer. My ideas are drawn from my world travels, surrounding nature, and my more mundane daily interactions and experiences. I spend my free time wandering cross-country, taking photographs for inspiration, foraging, and exploring with my dog.
As soon as I could hold a pen, I started drawing and always had an art box made by my dad filled with coloured pens, pencils, and crayons. At college, I became interested in detailed pen & ink drawing and explored oil painting and printmaking while focusing
on my biology degree.
My first commission was a project for the college and later during a break in my university studies, I illustrated the first Tahltan Language Dictionary. While working for an import company, I was able to combine world traveling with sweater designing and got to work
closely with multiple women’s knitting cooperatives in Nepal.
As I wander and work, I photograph and interpret the natural world through many mediums, including coloured or black and white illustrations, beadwork, woolen sweater design, and Norse metal weaving. For the last few years, I have primarily focused on
acrylic painting and in June 2025, I had an exhibition at the Terrace Art Gallery.
Nature can be luscious, vibrant, and immersive, but there are subtler undetected colours and hidden beauty waiting to be teased from the overlooked and subdued landscapes. I am drawn to the thread of light that moves my eye through a scene. I look for patterns in
the play of dancing branches, pull light from dark, and colour from muted backgrounds. Currently, I am focusing mostly on scenery but have recently discovered an interest inportrait painting. I love everything nature-based, appreciate realistic attention to detail,
and I especially love exaggeration through bright colours, shapes, and patterns. I strive to instill a surreal, dream-like lens over the already beautiful world around me. These paintings provide a glimpse into my world, translated and interpreted through the use of
amplified colour.
