Winter 2021

Main Wall: Mark Thibeault

Mark Thibeault’s practice extends across painting, music and lutherie. Working from his Telkwa studio in northern British Columbia Canada, he is inspired by the natural environment, and how it and human experience both continually adapt to the other’s changing influence and needs.

Growing up in Belle River Ontario, a small rural farming community, he witnessed surrounding smaller towns and villages amalgamate to become larger municipalities. Neighbours and family would commute to factory jobs serving Windsor’s automotive industry, as fields and farms that once employed workers, were subdivided and developed to house a growing population.

The notion of constant change, adaptation and improvisation is part of his creative process.  Thibeault’s paintings are rich with varied marks, layers of collage, acrylic and oil paint. The mood of each piece is governed by the previous line’s influence and affect. His expressive paintings are a collection of experiences finding their way to be witnessed as a mark - an intuitive unveiling or revealing of the inherent linear compositions woven through our perception of the world and our interactions within it.

Thibeault’s work has been selected for Art Folio Annual 2021, a curated annual publication featuring the most exciting contemporary abstract artists worldwide.

Thibeault studied for a BFA Honours in visual arts, primarily painting and drawing, at the University of Windsor, Ontario (1992). As a musician and multi-instrumentalist he is often called upon to provide rich texture and mood in recordings and live music performances with award winning producers and artists. As a luthier he has designed and crafted over 400 world-class musical instruments, examples of which are reproduced in major publications, celebrating the art of lutherie, including Terry Burrows’ 1001 Guitars To Dream of Playing Before You Die. Thibeault was the inaugural Cassiar Cannery Artist in Residence in 2019 and his work has been presented in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout Canada, including: solo exhibition, Two Rivers Gallery - Succession (2021); The Museum of Northern British Columbia - Cycles (2020); Smithers Art Gallery - A Line Collected (2019); Smithers Art Gallery - Home  (2013).
