Mark Thibeault
Bio

Mark Thibeault’s practice extends across painting, music and lutherie. Working from his Telkwa studio in northern British Columbia Canada, he is inspired by the natural environment, and how it and human experience both continually adapt to the other’s changing influence and needs. The notion of constant change, adaptation and improvisation is part of his creative process.

As a guitar builder he has designed and crafted over 400 world-class musical instruments, examples of which are reproduced in major publications celebrating the art of lutherie, including Terry Burrows’ 1001 Guitars To Dream of Playing Before You Die.

As a multi-instrumentalist he is often called upon by award winning producers and recording artists to provide sonic textures and soundscapes to recordings and live performances.

His expressive paintings are a collection of experiences finding their way to be witnessed as a mark - an intuitive unveiling or revealing of the inherent linear compositions woven through our perception of the world and our interactions within it.

Thibeault’s work has recently been selected for Art Folio Annual 2021, A Curated Collection of the World’s Most Exciting Artists.

Thibeault studied for a BFA Honours in visual arts at the University of Windsor, Ontario (1992).

He was the inaugural Cassiar Cannery Artist in Residence in 2019 and his work has been presented in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout Canada and in London including,  Archetypes and Allegory Solo Exhibition, NoonPowell Fine Art, London (2022),

Artist Statement

My work is greatly inspired by the natural world and how it and human experience continually react and adapt to the others’ changing influence and needs.

Postcards From the Pacific

Postcards serve to track our history. They capture a moment that speaks to a passing ideology and offer a further reading into our personal and collected past.
Postcards From The Pacific is a collection of abstract and expressive paintings inspired by buildings, the landscape and rich biodiversity of northwestern British Columbia, Canada. These paintings explore impermanence and serve as snapshots used to memorialize a moment or ideology that is unchanging or has since changed.
