Artist Biography:
Veronica Walker is an emerging artist who grew up and still lives in Northern BC. As a child she spent a lot of time exploring the forests and wetlands around the family home, instilling a sense of appreciation for the natural world. For the last 10 years she has worked in forestry, opening up a whole new world of inspiration. She found herself fascinated by the views accessed via logging roads and the beauty in a stand before and even after harvest. Finding herself particularly drawn to the sunlight filtering through the trees, a mosaic of colour is often a feature of her paintings. Veronica has had a couple local exhibitions in the last year and her work is currently featured on the
cover of the Visit Terrace Tourism Guide.
Artist Statement:
Working mostly with acrylic on canvas, I generally start with a reference photo(s) and from there, explore the shapes with colours and lines until I think I’ve captured the “feeling” I was aiming for. My work is fairly abstract and messy, but so am I. Working in forestry has taught me to see things differently as I often worked remotely and alone, providing an opportunity to pay more attention to my surroundings. Although I’ve always painted, it wasn’t until recently that I decided to commit more to it. I used to struggle with finishing a painting and would hit a dead end. Now I’ve learned to push past the ugly phase and see it through, usually as surprised as everyone else at the outcome. Not every painting works out, but every painting teaches me a little more and I hope to never stop learning now that I’ve opened this door.
